It was not a good day for an understrength VEC 2nds, who went down 6-2 to Division 2A top-of-the-table side Oldbury FC in Aylesbury Park.
Paddy Cook scored a goal in each half for VEC but this effort went narrowly wide.
Conall O’Shaughnessy about to head in VEC’s last gasp equalizer at the end of extra time which brought our FAI Junior Cup game against Leinster Senior League outfit Booth Road Celtic to a dreaded penalty shoot-out on the SDFL’s Astro.
VEC had opened the scoring with Neill Love’s first goal for VEC in just the 2nd minute and an exquisite second followed from Jordan Howard in the 27th minute before the home team pulled one back in stoppage time in the first half. They then levelled the game 6 minutes into the second half and it remained 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Extra time followed and Booth Road took a fortuitous lead in the first period when the ball was deflected by a VEC defender into his own goal. But the equalizer brought it to 3-3 and penalties where VEC unfortunately missed two, resulting in the home team advancing on a 4-1 shoot-out score.
With just 12 minutes left on the clock away to Ayrfield Utd. on Saturday, VEC were staring at an early exit from the LFA Junior Cup; that is until Joey Byrne (9) popped up with his 2nd goal on the day (click on pic.) and then Seamus Staunton heading in a powerful header with just 7 minutes remaining, to give VEC a deserved 3-2 win over the Leinster Senior League outfit.
The home team had opened the scoring with a well taken breakaway goal in the 17th minute and held onto that lead until the 53rd minute when Joey scored his first goal. VEC fell behind for a second time some 15 minutes later, before the second comeback in the 78th minute. We move on to the next round!
This James McGauran 30-minute strike ensured that VEC took all 3 points against Glasnaion FC in Johnstown Park in the Premier Division on Saturday.
Despite creating plenty of chances, VEC couldn’t add another goal and held out for a 1-0 win to make it 3 wins out of 3. See more pics here!

This was Paddy Cook’s brilliant strike in the 20th minute which flew into the top corner of the net for VEC 2nds second goal against Frank Celtic, as we recorded a comprehensive 5-0 win in this Division 2A match Terenure on Saturday.
Colm McSharry had opened the scoring 10 minutes earlier and added another later on, while VEC’s other goalscorers were Ronan Corbett and Conor O’Neill.
In the earlier Premier Division fixture, Seamus Staunton had his 34th minute penalty saved before scoring two goals in the 54th and 55th minutes to secure VEC’s 2-1 win over Arthur Griffith Park FC, after the visitors had taken an unexpected 2nd minute lead.
After a good start to the season, VEC 2nds failed to take their chances in this Division 2A clash in Terenure and eventually succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Stedfast Utd. on Tuesday.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, VEC had a number of chances in the third quarter to get back on terms, but couldn’t find the back of the net and once Stedfast got the third goal mid-way through the half, unfortunately there was no coming back for the home team.
