A point a piece was likely a fair result in the Sportslink Complex today with the home side completing their comeback with the last kick of the game in the 96th minute. The travelling Terenure men will be disappointed having earned a 2-nil lead in the first half thanks to a lot of hard work and a touch of opportunism. Paddy Cook opened the scoring with some perfectly executed quick thinking, lobbing the home keeper from 40 yards. Soon afterwards Pat Meghen doubled the lead with a powerful half volley into the roof of the net.
The second half saw Ely increase their intensity and begin to look a consistent threat on the front foot. Pulling one back on the hour mark, momentum looked to be with the home side. However, VEC held out well for the following 30mins and looked to have secured the 3 points when Colly Power saved an 89th minute penalty. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, as a last gasp ball over the top caught the VEC defence off-guard and Ely nabbed an equaliser in the ensuing chaos.
A tough and competitive game of football, one very much divided into two halves, ending 2-2.
