St. Mary’s (Sandyford) FC v VEC FC

Conor Vaughan (pic.) scored his first goal for VEC when opening the scoring in this ‘must win’ Premier Division match in Sandyford. Joey Byrne scored our second from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute when the home team were reduced to 10 and then Rory Kiely (also with his first goal for the Club) put ‘the icing on the cake’ with an audacious free-kick five minutes later to secure an important 3 league points for VEC.

Jeff De Castro (11) celebrates in the 20th minute after Tarjei Skaar connected with his free kick to score his first goal for VEC. Jeff’s sublime swerving shot in the 13th minute had cancelled out the home team’s opener in the 5th minute. But 2 minutes later they took a 2-1 lead and after Tarjei’s goal, they took the lead for the 3rd time in the 32nd minute. However, a severely depleted VEC team (with only 11 fit players) battled hard to retain parity, and went close a few times, only for St. Mary’s to score a fourth with just 5 minutes remaining!

After conceding a goal after just 45 seconds, where our goalkeeper Sergei was obviously ‘blinded’ by the low sun, Tshepo Mansho got our equalizer in the 26th minute, only for the home team to regain the lead 4 minutes later from the penalty spot. Then disaster struck again after just 55 seconds of the second half, as we conceded a third. Although we pressed hard to get back into it, a clever lob in the 85th minute by their no. 16 ensured their win, despite Joey Byrne’s consolation goal at the end.
