Howth Celtic v VEC FC

An unfortunate o.g. in the 25th minute gave the home team the lead followed by a second goal 12 minutes later. VEC had a few chances to pull one back but then 2 quick goals half way through the 2nd half made it 4-0 and they added a fifth at the end. It was tough on our ‘5th choice’ GK Shane O’Connor, who valiantly stepped into the breach – making some great saves – with the others injured/working.

VEC FC v Blackforge FC

The visitor’s had opened the scoring in the 9th minute after a defensive error, but Andy Hooke’s deserved equaliser just on the break, had the scores level at 1-1 at half-time, with everything to play for in this semi-final of the Shield. Unfortunately, we conceded a 2nd goal just 3 minutes after the re-start and never really recovered with Blackforge adding 3 more to advance to the Shield final.

Harding IF FC v VEC FC

With both teams defending so well, scoring chances were few and far between in this cup quarter-final. However, the home team took theirs – scoring in the 27th and 47th minutes and while VEC’s competitive spirit and commitment shone through, as we pushed forward in an effort to get back into this cup match, they added a third 7 minutes from time.

 

Celtic Utd. v VEC FC

Paddy Cook opened the scoring for VEC in the 25th minute, only for the home team to equalise 10 minutes later. A second from Paddy just 7 minutes into the second half – this time from the penalty spot – sent us on our way. Ciar McCormick scored his first (pic.) on the hour mark followed by his second 10 minutes from time as VEC cruised to victory and 3 valuable points.

VEC FC v St. Mary’s (Sandyford) FC

This was our only goal scored by Joey Byrne in the 33rd minute. It was a lackluster performance on the night, but we were on course for all 3 points until 2 minutes from time, when the most bizarre equaliser was scored.
While the St. Mary’s player was clearly offside, the referee decided to play advantage as the ball reached the goalkeeper. However, when Eoin placed the ball for what he believed to be a free out, the St. Mary’s player ran onto the ball and kicked it into the net. The upshot of this is that the opposition gained an advantage and scored a goal (to draw the game) when clearly their player was flagged for offside and confirmed by the referee when questioned, that he was offside!
Law 5 of the IFAB Laws of the Game states that “A referee can penalise the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue”. There is no rigid time limit written into the rules. Clearly, the anticipated advantage did not ensue to VEC and arguably the goal should not have stood!
