Paddy Cook set us on our way in the 7th minute, followed by his second goal after 25 minutes. Unfortunately, we allowed the home team back into the game in the 2nd half, when they scored just 2 minutes after the re-start, and then with a sweet free kick in the 70th minute. They held out for the draw, despite relentless VEC pressure in the final 10 minutes!

Shelbourne AFC v VEC FC
In the shoot-out, only Paddy Cook and Conor Lewis converted their spot kicks from our first five, with Shelbourne then needing to convert their 5th to advance in the Cup, after 2 brilliant saves by ‘Colly’. Fortunately, he was our saviour for a third time with another magnificent save (first clip) and it went to ‘sudden death’. 4 superbly taken spot-kicks by Neill Love, Ron Newe, Shane O’Connor & Ronan Murphy (and 3 by the opposition) meant the home team needed to score their 9th spot-kick to stay in contention. Alas, they put it wide and VEC advanced to the quarter-finals on a 6-5 penalty shoot-out result. [See the 18 penalties here].

Shelbourne SSC FC v VEC FC
There wasn’t much between both teams until Shane O’Connor scored the first goal in the 30th minute, heading the ball in from a corner kick (pic). Paddy Cook scored our second 8 minutes later when he squeezed the ball in at the near post (pic) and then a bizarre own goal 2 minutes before the break put us in a commanding 3-0 lead. There were very few chances for either team thereafter, until a sweet long-range strike from Paddy for his second goal with 7 minutes remaining, made it 4-0.
VEC FC v Malahide Utd 2nds
3 goals in a 7-minute spell in the first half put VEC on the road to a deserved 3 points in this league match. Leading goal-scorer Pat Meghen opened the scoring after 15 minutes, followed by skipper Shane O’Conner’s bullet header (pic.2) and then Pat’s penalty, before Paddy Cook made it 4-0 just before half-time, with an audacious lob from all of 40 yards which was also spectacular.
Another clever effort from Paddy 7 minutes after the restart put the game beyond reach. Significantly, this was Paddy’s 50th goal for VEC. In the final 10 minutes, the visitors pulled one back, but substitute Conor Lewis (pic.1) had the final say scoring – yet again – against Malahide Utd.

St. Mary’s (Sandyford) FC v VEC FC
After conceding a goal after just 45 seconds, where our goalkeeper Sergei was obviously ‘blinded’ by the low sun, Tshepo Mansho got our equalizer in the 26th minute, only for the home team to regain the lead 4 minutes later from the penalty spot. Then disaster struck again after just 55 seconds of the second half, as we conceded a third. Although we pressed hard to get back into it, a clever lob in the 85th minute by their no. 16 ensured their win, despite Joey Byrne’s consolation goal at the end.
